How to Stay Clear of Frequent Gardening Errors

Before you start your garden you will have, no doubt, visualized how you want it to look when it’s in its prime. Unfortunately, there are a lot of mistakes you can make that will prohibit your garden from flourishing fully. Even something as elementary as the types of plants you put in your garden, and their locations relative to each other, is a frequent oversight of a lot of beginning gardeners. With this article, we hope to save you the trouble of making some of the commonplace errors that new gardeners tend to make.

Make sure you have adequate tools when you begin gardening. When you take on any endeavor you should be equipped with the right tools; or your task can be harder than is necessary. If you’re wondering why digging is so difficult, for example, it may be because your old shovel is dull. Tools like your hoe, shovels or shears all need to be sharpened regularly so as not to cause undue exertion on your part. Instead of harming your back by packing these tools around the place, you should consider using a garden cart. Lacking basic tools can subvert your gardening efforts, and some people give up thinking that simple tasks are just too hard when the real problem was that they didn’t acquire the right tools. One thing a lot of people mess up with any gardening is pruning. Some plants, trees and herbs will grow inaccurately if you do not keep up with pruning them. While different plants have different pruning needs, you should pay attention to certain signals, such as worn leaves or plants that grow too tall to remain stable. Certain things, like hedges and fruit trees need frequent pruning. Simultaneously, you need to make sure you are not going overboard with pruning. Ordinarily, you should make sure not to exceed more than 25-percent of the undergrowth at one time. Dependent on your plant varieties, you might have a range of different pruning tools, from hedge trimmers to saws for cutting branches.

Many new gardeners pick plants emotionally, due to what they like the look of or the taste of and do not give enough thought to how well it will grow in their location. You may fancy the idea of eating an avocado or orange fresh from your garden, but this is unrealistic if you live in a cold region. The same rings true for people up North trying to grow a cactus or other tropical plant. Setting up a hothouse is one way around this however if this is your first year of gardening and you do not want too much work, stand by the plants that will naturally flourish in your area. You can study the USDA Plant Hardiness Zone (US), which demonstrates which plants grow effortlessly and in which zones of the US.

It is important to have a game plan in mind before you plant a garden so that you can avoid common mistakes that may cause your garden to fail. At the same time, don’t let the fear of making mistakes stop you from enjoying your garden. Mistakes are inevitable for people that garden regardless of your experience level. The important thing is that you learn from everything you do, so each season your garden is a little healthier.
